Johan Rockström (Born in 1965), Sweden
（Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research）

Rockström is an internationally recognized scientist on global sustainability issues, who led the development of the new Planetary Boundaries framework for human development in the current era of rapid global change at the Stockholm Resilience Centre. He is a leading scientist on global water resources, with about 25 years of experience from applied water research in tropical regions, and more than 150 research publications in fields ranging from applied land and water management to global sustainability.

He acts as an advisor for sustainable development issues at noteworthy international meetings, such as the World Economic Forum, the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conferences (UNFCCC).

 

Murakami Kazue (Born in1940), Japan

After witnessing the poor medical care available for children when visiting developing nations, she left for the Republic of Mali in Africa in 1989. She learned a great deal from living in the Sahara Desert and in rural villages in the south, later settling permanently in Mali where she established the Japanese NGO support group "Association pour la cooperation Et l’autogestion Rurale en Afrique de l’ouest (CARA)” (Association for the Cooperation and Rural Self-support in West Africa) in 1993.

In rural areas of West Africa suffering from desertification, disease, and poverty, there has been a continued practice of activities (public health, environmental conservation, educational activities, etc.) that supports a sustainable society which strikes a balance between the local environment and the people's livelihoods on a local level, all the while maintaining a close proximity to the local people by eating the same food, and even experiencing the same kind of suffering when she became infected with malaria.

The organization aims to "enable people to build healthy, independent lives with hope for the future with their own hands" by working together with residents to develop a sustainable society from within the local community, as this is the only true "home" for the people living there, even if it’s in a harsh environment.

 

NISHIOKA Shuzo (Born in 1939), Japan

In 1990, the Center for Global Environmental Research (CGER) was established within NIES. There, he helped CGER mobilized the Japanese global environmental research community through building a network of independent researchers and institutes working in diversified filed.

Between 1988 and 2007, he contributed to editing report for a fourth consecutive term. With other Lead Authors, he edited the 1994 Special Report: “IPCC Technical Guidelines for Assessing Climate Change Impacts and Adaptations” that used in many countries.

Between 2004 and 2008, he leaded the research project “2050 Low-Carbon Japan Project”, which comprises 60 researchers across academia. This project utilized the comprehensive assessment model used in planning Japan’s ”6% GHG reduction target” in Kyoto Protocol.

This project had started from the idea that it is insufficient for just changing energy system, but for transforming whole society to combat climate change. Then, the result of this study formed the scientific basis for PM Fukuda’s announcement that “Japan will aim to become a low-carbon society by reducing emissions by 60-80% by 2050”, made just before the Toyako Summit in 2008.

At G8 in 2008, Japan proposed the establishment of the International Research Network for Low Carbon Societies (LCS-RNet) to strengthen science-based policymaking in G8 countries. He served as LCS-RNet and its Asian version “the Low Carbon Asia Research Network (LoCARNet)’s Secretary-General, and helped Asian countries like Thailand, Vietnam and Bhutan to respond to climate change.
