Driver Aptitude Consultations for Persons with Impaired Hearing

We offer driver aptitude consultations for persons with hearing impairments who plan to:

Apply for a driver license for the first time;or

Apply to renew an existing driver license

Persons applying for a driver license for the first time who need to wear hearing aids

Persons who have a license that is conditional on wearing hearing aids

Persons whose license is conditional on wearing hearing aids who wish to drive ordinary vehicles or semi medium-size vehicles without wearing hearing aids can acquire a license that is conditional on using a special rear view mirror. Please consult us for details.

Special rear view mirror and others condition

This kind of license permits the holder to drive an ordinary vehicle or a semi medium-size vehicle without wearing hearing aids, on condition that the vehicle is fitted with a special rear view mirror and others (wide mirror, auxiliary mirror or rear confirmation device) and that a sign is displayed indicating that the driver is hearing impaired.

Types of vehicles that persons with impaired hearing can drive

From March 12, 2017, the types of vehicles that persons with impaired hearing are permitted to drive was expanded. (A person with impaired hearing is defined as anyone who is unable to hear a 90 dB car horn sound at a distance of 10 meters, even when wearing hearing aids.)

※On condition that a sign is displayed indicating the driver is hearing impaired and that a special rear view mirror is fitted to the vehicle.

Fitting a special rear view mirror (wide mirror or auxiliary mirror)

When driving a regular vehicle (car)or a semi medium-size vehicle, the vehicle must be fitted with a wide mirror, auxiliary mirror or rear confirmation device.
