Ports in Kyoto Prefecture and Kyoto Maizuru Port

Kyoto Maizuru Port is a major port facing the Sea of Japan. Its bay features a deeply indented rias coastline, creating a natural harbor with calm winds and waves throughout the year. The port administrator is Kyoto Prefecture, and it is designated as a major port under the Port and Harbor Act.

Kyoto Maizuru Port has long been known as a port of call for Kitamaebune ships since ancient times and flourished as one of the leading commercial ports on the Sea of Japan coast. During the Meiji era, Japan's only naval base on the Sea of Japan coast was established here, leading to its development as a military port. Today, the Maizuru District Headquarters of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force is located in the east port area, while the 8th Regional Headquarters of the Japan Coast Guard is situated in the west port area. The port functions as a key hub for security and maritime surveillance along the Sea of Japan coast.

Regular container shipping routes operate twice a week between Busan Port in South Korea and once a week between Kobe Port. Through transshipment at the Busan and Kobe Ports, import and export to destinations around the world is possible. Additionally, a long-distance ferry service has operated between Otaru Port in Hokkaido for over 50 years, serving both cargo and passenger transport.

Furthermore, Maizuru City features tourist attractions such as the “Red Brick Park” and the “Goro Sky Tower.” Nearby Miyazu City boasts “Amano-hashidate”, one of Japan's three scenic spots, while Ine Town is home to the “Ine Funaya” (boat houses). Consequently, numerous cruise ships have been calling at ports in the area in recent years.
