芦生の森　Ashiu Forest

　芦生の森は、由良川源流域に位置する西日本有数の天然林です。気候的に日本海型と太平洋型の移行帯に位置し、植生区分としても暖温帯と冷温帯の移行帯に位置する環境から、植物や動物、昆虫などの種類が多く、アシウスギなど地域の名がついた学術上貴重な種も多数見られます。

　現在は京都大学の芦生研究林として、研究や教育目的で管理されていますが、近年シカによる植生被害や一般入林者による環境負荷などが問題となっています。京都府を代表する貴重な自然を次世代に伝えるためにも、ルールを守って自然をお楽しみください。

　 The Ashiu Forest is one of the finest natural forests of western Japan. Situated in the Yura River watershed at the transition between the Japan Sea and Pacific Ocean climate zones, and also at the transition between warm-weather and cold-weather vegetation zones, the forest has a large variety of plants, animals and insects. They include several academically important species named after this area, such as Ashiu-sugi cedar.

   Today the forest is managed by Kyoto University for research and education, however, in recent years it has suffered vegetation damage by deer and environmental strain from human visitors. In order to preserve this outstanding natural treasure of Kyoto Prefecture for future generations, it is important for visitors to follow the rules established for its conservation.
